MultiPOS FAQs
Common questions about running a counter with MultiPOS. For a step-by-step start, read How to Set Up Your Outlet and then How to Take Your First Sale.
Where is the POS terminal?
At the path set under Configuration and General, which defaults to yoursite.com/pos. Change POS Terminal URL Path if you want something else. If the URL returns a 404 straight after install, go to Settings and Permalinks and click Save Changes to flush the rewrite rules.
Who can open the POS?
Three roles only. POS Cashier, which MultiPOS creates on activation, plus Administrator and Shop manager. Any other logged-in user who visits the terminal URL is redirected to My Account, and a visitor who is not logged in gets the POS login screen.
Does the POS share stock with my website?
Yes in the free version, which always uses central WooCommerce stock. Sell the last item at the counter and the website stops offering it. Pro adds a per-outlet stock model for stores running several branches, set by Inventory Management under Configuration and General.
Why is my POS order billed to my shop's address?
That is deliberate. A counter sale happens at the shop, so both the billing and shipping address on a POS order come from the outlet, and the tax is worked out against the outlet's country, state, city and postcode. Keep the outlet address accurate for that reason.
What status do POS orders get?
Whatever Initial Order Status says under Configuration and General. It ships as Completed, which suits a counter sale where the customer leaves with the goods. Choose Processing if POS orders still need packing, or On hold if payment comes later.
Can I use a barcode scanner?
Yes. Any USB scanner in keyboard mode works with no driver. Scan into the product search box, which matches title, ID, SKU and barcode number, or into the dedicated barcode popup, which adds the product straight to the cart. Assign a barcode to each product first under Assign Barcodes.
Can I sell while the internet is down?
Not in the free version. It detects the connection and refuses to place an order, apply a coupon or save a customer while offline. Pro's Enable Fast Offline-Online Sync queues orders in the browser instead. Reconnecting does not send them, which catches people out. Open Orders, then the Offline tab, and press Sync All Orders. The POS blocks logout while any are still queued.
How do I check the cash drawer?
The terminal's Statistics screen shows Today's Cash Sale, Today's Total Sale and an Expected Drawer Amount. Count the drawer and compare. Only subtract your opening cash if it was never recorded in the POS, because Enable Cash Drawer Popup already folds it into the expected figure. For the full record, filter the Transactions screen by date and cashier and read In and Out row by row.
What do In and Out mean on a transaction?
In is money into the drawer and Out is money out of it. On a sale, In is what the customer handed over and Out is the change given back, and change is only recorded when the payment method's slug is exactly cash, because none leaves the drawer on a card payment. That is why the Cash method's slug should never be renamed. Out is also used by a refund and by a manual cash-out.
Do refunds show in the transactions list?
Yes. A refund taken in the POS writes its own transaction row with the amount under Out and Refund in the Method column, and the Expected Drawer Amount comes down by that much. So a cash refund does not leave your drawer looking short. Refunding from the terminal is a Pro feature.
How do I refund a POS sale?
In the terminal, open Orders, select the order, and press the green Refund button under Print Invoice. Step the quantity up on each line coming back, decide whether Restock Items stays ticked, read the Refund Amount, and press Refund. There is no box to type an amount into. The POS records the refund and puts the stock back, but it never moves the money, so hand the cash over or credit the card yourself.
Can a cashier take money off a sale without a coupon?
In Pro, yes. A Discount button sits between Coupon and Hold Order in the cart, taking either a fixed amount or a percentage, and a per-line discount lives inside each expanded cart line. There is no approval step and no separate permission, so any cashier can discount any sale. The free version discounts through coupon codes only.
Why is Gross Discounted zero on a day we gave discounts?
Because the Discounted Orders and Gross Discounted charts are built from WooCommerce's coupon records, and a manual discount typed in at the counter is not a coupon. The money is right everywhere else, since a discounted sale has a lower order total, but no chart totals up what was given away by hand. Use coupon codes for anything you need to count.
Can the cash drawer open automatically when a receipt prints?
Not from MultiPOS, which prints through the browser and sends no drawer command. It usually works anyway, because the drawer plugs into the receipt printer rather than the computer, and most printers can be set to fire the drawer on every print. Turn that on in the printer's own driver. Note it will then open on a reprint and on a card sale too, since the printer cannot tell them apart.
How do I record cash that is not a sale?
With a manual transaction, which is Pro. Press the plus icon above Today's Transactions on the Statistics screen, choose In or Out, enter the amount and say what it was for. Expected Drawer Amount moves with it, so paying a courier out of the drawer no longer leaves the count wrong. It cannot be edited or deleted afterwards, so correct a mistake by adding the opposite.
Do WooCommerce coupons work at the POS?
Yes, and every restriction on them applies exactly as it does online. Expiry dates, usage limits, minimum spend, product restrictions and individual-use rules all bite. An email-restricted coupon needs a real customer set on the cart, because it cannot validate against the guest account.
Can one order be paid part cash and part card?
Only in Pro. Turn on Multi-Payment Support under Configuration and General, then use Add Another Payment Method on the payment screen. Each part writes its own transaction row against the same order. The free version takes one method per order and rejects a second.
Can I run more than one shop?
Not in the free version, which is single-outlet by design. Pro adds multiple outlets, each with its own address, payment methods, stock and receipt template, plus per-cashier outlet assignment so staff only see the branches they work at.
How do I change the receipt size?
Under Configuration and Printer, set Thermal Roll Width to match your paper, usually 80mm or 58mm rather than the 150mm default. Leave Thermal Content Height empty so receipts grow to fit. A cashier can override all three for their own terminal under Settings and Outlet in the POS.
Can I customize what the receipt says?
The free version ships one translatable receipt template that carries your logo, the outlet's details, the line items, the totals and the payment. Pro adds a drag-and-drop composer, multiple templates and per-outlet receipt branding.
Does MultiPOS work with WooCommerce HPOS?
Yes. The plugin supports WooCommerce High-Performance Order Storage, so you can leave HPOS switched on. POS orders appear in the WooCommerce orders list either way, tagged with an Order Type column that reads POS.
What is the difference between the free and Pro versions?
The free version is a complete single-outlet POS: selling, barcode scanning, receipt printing, customers, coupons, cashier accounts, restaurant tables, the orders list and the transactions list. Pro adds multiple outlets, per-outlet stock, offline selling, split payments, refunding from the terminal, manual discounts, manual cash in and out, the kitchen display, custom and weighed line items, the receipt composer, an installable app, detailed reports and LoyaltyX rewards.
